Massive 7.1 magnitude earthquake shakes Peru
March 2,2019
Mubasher: Peru was hit by a huge 7.1 magnitude earthquake amid a massive activity under the so-called Ring of Fire that sent 46 separate tremors through the countries within 24 hours.
The quake struck Southern Peru, 67 kilometres (km) north-northwest of the city Juliaca at 8:50 am GMT and was unusually deep at 258 km, and was felt across South America in nearby Brazil, Bolivia and Chile.
The epicentre was roughly 27 km northeast of the town of Azangaro, close to the Peruvian-Bolivian borders in the Andes region.
A subsequent tsunami is not expected, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said, citing all available data.
It is worth noting that the Ring of Fire is a horseshoe-shaped geological disaster zone stretching across costlines on the basin of the Pacific Ocean where many earthquakes and volcanic eruptions take place.
The earthquake came a week after a deep 7.5 magnitude quake that hit the Peru-Ecuador border region.
