Strong quake hits eastern Indonesia

16 December 2018

An earthquake with a 6.1 magnitude has struck about 168km south-southwest of the town of Jayapura, Indonesia.

The US Geological Survey first reported the earthquake at a 6.1 magnitude at a distance of 174km from Jayapura, close to the border with Papua New Guinea.

There were no immediate reports of casualties.

Indonesia is frequently hit by strong earthquakes, sitting on the Pacific 'Ring of Fire'. A magnitude 6.5 struck earlier this month, and more than 1300 were killed after Sulawesi was struck by a quake and tsunami in late September.

The most destructive in recent history was the 9.1 Boxing Day earthquake of 2004, which killed an estimated 230,000 people.
